Elon Musk criticized Twitter for introducing the NFT profile picture feature

Elon Musk doesn’t appear to be happy with Twitter’s decision to allow users to use verified non-fungible tokens or NFT profile picture(s) as display photos. In a statement, Elon Musk, CEO of SpaceX and Tesla, termed the integration “annoying” and indicated that Twitter was squandering engineering resources on it rather than working to reduce spam activity on the network. New capabilities for Twitter users have just been introduced, with the first of them being the ability to utilise NFTs as profile images for Twitter Blue members on iOS devices.

The most recent choice on Twitter differs differently from the standard round-type display picture on the site. This one is in the shape of a hexagon.

Musk Criticized Twitter

Musk has previously expressed his support for blockchain technology, but he has also expressed his disapproval with certain aspects of the system when he did not agree with them. His current criticism of Twitter’s NFT decision is most likely a result of the increasing number of cryptocurrency giveaway scams perpetrated by fraudsters impersonating the Tesla CEO and other important figures.

The situation progressed to the point that Twitter was forced to remove unverified accounts that used the name “Elon Musk” after changing their names in 2018.

“This is annoying,” Musk wrote in a tweet in response to Twitter’s plan to use NFT.

Immediately following that, he provided an explanation, saying, “Twitter is wasting engineering resources on this bs while crypto fraudsters are having a spambot block party in every thread.”

Twitter’s NFT Profile Picture Feature

The launch of Twitter’s NFT function comes months after the social media platform enabled users to send and receive Bitcoin. In the cryptocurrency world, an NFT is a data unit that is recorded on a digital ledger known as a blockchain, which is also the technology that underpins cryptocurrency.

During the course of this technology’s development, NFTs gained in popularity. NFTs are shipped with certificates, which are used to certify that a digital item is a one-of-a-kind. They can represent a variety of digital data, including images, movies, audio snippets, and other forms of digital files.

Musk has frequently shown his support for this developing business on social media and through his electric car firm, Tesla Motors, Inc. The announcement that Tesla will accept Bitcoin payments was made in March of last year, but Musk then reversed his decision, citing environmental considerations. Tesla began taking Dogecoin payments for certain of its items earlier this month.

About NFT

In a summary, NFTs are blockchain-based digital tokens. Cryptocurrencies like bitcoin or ethereum run on the blockchain, a secured one, which is the underlying technology. NFT may be used to tokenize anything from a JPG image to a GIF or a song. Anything that may be conceived of as a digital collectable holds value. Because each token is unique and cannot be swapped for anything precisely the same, the term ‘non-fungible’ was coined to describe it.
