Will iPhone’s Type-C charger be a great change?

iPhones have been the class and trendiest thing one wants as an asset for the longest time. For years we have known Apple to pretty much ostracise the entire technological world. From having different operating systems to having different hardware requirements. It has pretty much been known that Apple does not like merging things with other competitors. We have Apple Music, facetime, etc that can’t be installed or used on any operating system other than it is from Apple. It’s so great for Android users to be able to share chargers so easily regardless of the phone brand they own, meanwhile, Apple has their unique lightning cable that only works for Apple’s phone, or does it?

The lightning cable was a unique feature of Apple distinguishing it from other phones. But recently, Apple is yet again under fire for its charger controversy. Firstly we all remember the removal of charging adapters from phone boxes and selling them separately, which just quite frankly seemed like a marketing tactic. In this article, we would be discussing this urge to change the charger variant and what differences will it bring.

Why was Apple urged to release a Type-C charger?

So very recently, European regulators have decided for all smartphones to have a universal mode of charging after all which will be the Type-C charging cable. They have passed on a circular that addresses all smartphone companies to be acquiring Type-C chargers by the fall of 2024. So why is it done? EU mandates have stated that this will improve user convenience as well as contribute significantly to reducing electronic waste. Hence, Apple had no choice but to ditch its unique lightning port charger for the Type-C charger.

Greg Joswiak who is Apple’s senior vice president for Global marketing had simply just put it out that they had to “obviously” comply with the rules and that they just had no other choice when he was asked about his thoughts and opinions on Apple’s Type-C charger trajectory.

But in true Apple fashion, there always has to be a plot twist to everything, but would this plot twist revolutionize the way people look at Type-C chargers? Let’s find out by proceeding with it.

Apple’s Type-C charger

Apple still wants to remain isolated from other phone brands and obviously, there are particular reasons as well as strategies behind it. It is reportedly speculated that Apple is planning to integrate an IC chip in the charger for it to detect devices that are not from Apple. Hence, for those of us thinking that “finally, Type-C charger would be universal” yeah, you might be horrendously wrong.

The EU mandates can’t technically raise a question about this as they are indeed complying with the rules by switching over to the Type-C charger but also they wouldn’t be technically reducing any much electrical waste as they are doing now as that charger would still be unique for iOS users.

Various strategies are involved in this switchover which is discussed below.

Strategies behind it

Apple is known for being unique and that’s how its branding and marketing works. The whole reason people tend to buy iPhones and Apple products is because it has rather the feel than features. Apple is known for its high value in the market even though it might provide great security and other accessible features, it is quite known that the only reason Apple is still running in the market is because of the brand name that they have maintained. That’s exactly why they still want to stay isolated and not let their chargers charge any Android phones.

As they now lost the lightning port, they still have to maintain that image and that’s exactly why they are planning to add an IC chip that detects Apple devices and hence, charges only the ones that are from Apple which includes fast charging for their phones.

But there are certain advantages as well as Type-C can charge about 80x times faster than the lightning port as well as data transferring can be a lot faster. While lightning can transfer a great 480mbps of data, the Type-C can transfer around 40gbps of data which is a huge massive shift.

Conclusion

After this, it’s pretty obvious that no matter what Apple will try to stay secluded from its nemesis in every way, shape, or form. The Type-C charge just has to be the ultimate move even though they use the same charging variant, they still can’t charge their phone through Apple products. Hopefully, this article was informative and helped you understand why Apple is changing and what will be the consequences.
