American Women Quarters – 2022 Maya Angelou Quarter
The American Women Quarters Program is a collection of coins honoring trailblazing American women. The series is expected to run through 2025 and will be minted in Philadelphia and Denver. Shipping for the Maya Angelou 2022 quarter began on Monday and began at locations across the country. Angelou was a celebrated writer, performer, and social activist. She was the first Black woman to grace the back of a U.S. quarter.
The 2022 Maya Angelou quarter is the first of its kind to celebrate the life of an inspiring African-American woman. Angelou achieved fame as an author following the publication of her groundbreaking autobiography. Her other career highlights include dance and acting. She appeared in off-Broadway plays and wrote “Cabaret for Freedom,” a play with Godfrey Cambridge. She was also a member of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference and the National Book Awards.
The Maya Angelou quarter will feature the poet and civil rights activist. This is the first African-American woman to be honored on a quarter. In addition, the Wilma Mankiller quarter will highlight the Cherokee Nation’s first woman leader, who led the nation for a decade. During her tenure, the Cherokee population doubled. The series will be minted in Philadelphia and Denver. This year’s quarter is a special tribute to women, and collectors will want to get one of each.
